The Vampire Diaries: Kol And Sibling Rivalry

We thought that nobody could quite make an entrance like Elijah. But as Thursday night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries showed us, there’s a new bad boy vamp in town and he’s almost as dick-headed as Damon was. Yes, I’m referring to Kol Mikaelson. One episode in and Kol has already become a favorite with a familiar entrance.

It’s been easy to fall in love with actor Nathaniel Buzolic, who plays Kol, but after Kol’s little charade in ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ which almost resulted in our beloved Matt’s death, we are a little more wary of this newcomer.

Now after seeing bits and pieces of our Original siblings and their interactions together, we at TVAfterDark are wondering how far this sibling rivalry is going to go. Kol has already made waves with Klaus from the moment he was un-daggered, and now we can’t help but compare his antics to the Salvatore’s. Which begs the question: does Kol have all the ingredients of a Damon? We already know that his “I’ve met a lot of people, and you don’t particularly stand out” comment to Damon was as if he’d taken a page from the man himself. But does this Original brother have what it takes to combat the sibling rivalry Damon and Stefan do so well?

Let’s take a look at Kol’s moments in the last two episodes and compare them with some of Damon’s classic brotherly moments. Welcome Mikaelson family to the world of sibling rivalry on The Vampire Diaries.

Kol’s crushing handshake with Matt vs. Damon (almost) killing Caroline.

Let’s flashback firstly to when Caroline became a vampire in 2.02 ‘Brave New World’. It was Damon’s decision to go against his agreement with Stefan not to kill Caroline. Seem a little bit familiar? In 3.14 ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ we find ourselves in an eerily deja vu situation where Kol makes a nasty move to kill Matt, when Rebekah told him not to. Score 1 to Kol for causing a stir with sister-dearest.

Kol and Klaus: “Oh go back to staring at yourself.” Damon and Stefan: “I have no sense of Damon humor.”

It was highly entertaining to watch Klaus snap at Kol after he made the comment: “Again with the dagger threats – don’t you have any other tricks?”. The first Salvatore bickering moment it reminded me of was when Stefan was reminding Damon of the warning he gave him about Elena in 1.22 ‘Founder’s Day’. Damon: “You have no sense of humor.” Stefan: “I have no sense of Damon humor.” Ha, gotta be one of my favorites.

Kol: “Long time, brother.” Damon: “Hello, brother.”

Of course, the number one eerily familiar moment was Kol’s first appearance (alive) in The Vampire Diaries – in 3.13 ‘Bringing Out The Dead.’ Kol’s “Long time, brother” quickly alerted us to his personality and the connection could be drawn to Damon’s “Hello, brother” in the Pilot. If Kol is going to be half as good as Damon turned out (if he lives that long), then I like this Original brother already.

But which moment do you think stands out the most so far? Whichever you pick, I think it’s safe to say that we aren’t quite done with Kol yet. Anyone brave enough to stand up to Klaus has to be a fan favorite. Right?
