TV/Line interviewed The Walking Dead executive producer Robert Kirkman about tonight’s shocking finale, and what’s in store for season 3.
Beware of spoilers beyond this point!
The Walking Dead is they kind of show where no one is safe. Including the main cast. Remember Shane? TV/Line asked Kirkman if he ever contemplating killing a character, and then changed his mind at the last-minute. Kirkman said,
“One of the things that’s always been important to me with the Walking Dead comic book series is that you always be willing to get rid of every character at any moment if it serves the story. I’ve always tried not to grow any kind of attachment to any character.”
If you have been watching the entire season then you may have been one of the fans who thought the show had lost steam after the premiere episode. TV/Line asks Kirkman why they were lite on zombies in the first half of the season:
“It really comes down to storytelling. If you listen to music at maximum volume at all times, it eventually becomes quiet to you; you get used to it. We do stories where there aren’t a lot of zombies so that when there are a lot of zombies it’s that much more jarring and terrifying.”
One of the scenes that I personally saw fans ranting about on Twitter was the scene when Rick discussed with Lori why he killed Shane. The look of disgust Lori showed Rick made many fans hate her even more. Kirkman addresses this:
“A lot of that anger [she's expressing] could be directed at herself. I think she feels partially responsible for sending these two men on a path.”
Another jaw dropping scene in tonight’s episode was the introduction of Michonne. Fans of the comics immediately recognized her when she saved Andrea’s life, while non-comic readers were curious about the hooded hero. TV/Line asked Kirkman about how much like the comics the Michonne character will be in season 3. Kirkman said,
“She will be very similar to her comic-book counterpart. Most of the characters as they’ve been translated into TV are pretty much exactly the same character. Andrea is Andrea, Rick is Rick and Michonne is going to be Michonne. Now, the stories that we’re going to tell with her are going to be somewhat different at times. The show has always followed the comic book to a large extent, it just has different divergences from time-to-time and we’re definitely going to continue that in the third season. But the fans have expectations for Michonne, and I can say with full knowledge that their expectations are going to be met. They need not worry.”
Kirkman also made some other major revelations for season 3′s storyline. Click here to read more of his interview with TV/Line.
